Q and A with Donna (new mum to baby Lando)

How long was your labour? 9 hours and 7 minutes. Where did you labour? I was at home for the first 4 hours (around 8pm -12am) and then we went to Birthcare around midnight. What type of pain relief did you use at home? I used the TENS machine at home. Without the tens machine I feel as though it would have been a whole lot harder. I tried the shower and a few other techniques, but the TENS helped the most.  What helped you through the contractions? As well as TENS, the gas was extremely helpful in the beginning...

How TENS works using Low-Intensity & High-Intensity settings

Low-Intensity TENS & the Gate Control Theory When using TENS at a low-intensity level, it is working through the Gate Control Theory. The Gate Control Theory suggests that there’s only a certain amount of stimuli that can get through to the brain. In other words, there is a ‘gate’ that only lets so much sensory information through. So, with TENS, you’re ‘flooding the brain’ with this sensory buzzing feeling so that the brain can’t really perceive the sensation from labour contractions as much. Hayley NEARLY makes it to hospital to deliver her baby …but not quite!

Hayley shares with us her birth story.... At 5.30am I started having very mild contractions which felt just like period pain. I carried on with my normal day. At 4.10pm my waters broke with a huge gush and my midwife assured me ‘things would probably ramp up’ and that they did!!! After 10 minutes I decided, ‘holey crap it’s quite painful now’ so I put on the tens machine to use. It instantly made the contractions more bearable while we scampered around grabbing everything I felt we NEEDED to go the hospital now. It was now 4.40pm. The car drive...

Welcome to the World Baby Dustin

We love hearing your birth stories. Jahnea shares her story of Dustin arriving in the world… My water broke at 5:30pm. I had only just sat down after a tiring day wedding dress shopping with my friend. I was two days past my due date and finally had done all the things I needed to. I felt a funny twinge and thought that I needed to pee. So I took myself to the toilet and water rushed out as soon as I reached the bathroom. I did for a moment think I had wet myself. Every time I moved my...

Toni (and baby Julia) share their birth story...

I am super happy to share our birth story….. The birth of little Julia went so much better than I could have possibly imagined. Being our first bub we weren't sure what to expect during birth and having heard our fair share of horror stories, I had become pretty nervous in my last weeks of pregnancy. I certainly didn't expect to birth at home and without any medication at all. My first contraction was at about 2:30am, at least the first one to be strong enough to wake me up was. From then, I was having contractions every 40-30mins or so,...
