Here’s the science behind how a TENS machine works
TENS machines work in two ways: 1. On a high pulse rate of 90-130 Hz (the normal method of use), the electrical impulses generated by the TENS machine interfere with and block pain messages sent to the brain. This is due to the gate control theory of pain. This proposes that there is a gate mechanism in the brain and spinal cord nerves (the central nervous system). When the gate is open, pain messages get through to the brain and we feel pain. When the gate is closed, these pain messages are blocked and we do not feel pain. TENS...
Unplanned home birth for Nikki
Nikki had a wonderful unexpected home birth. With the help of TENS, her capable husband and a 111 operator, she did it! Here's Nikki's feedback... Thank you so so much for the TENS. It arrived just in time for our baby who arrived 3 weeks early. My waters broke at midnight and I had regular but very mild tightenings through to the morning. At around 7am we were heading out to drop off the toddler to her Nans and I put the TENS machine on. It was great advice to start using...
Danielle shares her beautiful birth story and talks about the pain relief methods that worked for her
I would love to share my birth labour story with you and tell you able the pain relief methods that helped me through. My labour progressed slowly with a long latent phase on Thursday until it ramped up on Friday afternoon. I began using the TENS machine & it helped me immensely. I really loved how the TENS helped me mentally; it gave me something else to focus on & helped draw the pain away from the contractions. In addition it assisted my breathing (hypno-breathing) and really helped me get into the zone. At 2am on Saturday (48hrs later) my contractions were at...
